Americans began a devastating war for independence, with James Otis’ words ringing in their ears:

“’We give all we have, lives, property, safety, skills . . . we fight, we die, for a simple thing. Only that a man can stand up.’”

How many American lives were lost and how many Americans were taken prisoner during that war?

Throughout the course of the war, an estimated 6,800 Americans were killed in action, 6,100 wounded, and upwards of 20,000 were taken prisoner…
