Please Evict Me
My Dad used to talk about a “Seasonal Defective Disorder” that made people drive rudely and recklessly around Christmas time and some other holidays.
I’ve begun to think that there’s an online pandemic time version of this disorder that causes people to be very touchy.
One lady, on a site that I’m often on, asked the members at large what we thought of a theory that she heard. She’d heard that driving with our car windows half way up v. all the way up makes it safe to not wear our masks.
I said that on the face of it that the idea sounded ridiculous to me, and she was horribly offended.
There are a lot of responses to her being offended that I could have given, besides the one that I gave.
I could have said:
“People can BE offended and the world will not end.”
Or Simply
“I’m sorry.”
Or
“I’m SO TERRIBLY SORRY. What can I do to make you feel better?”
I think that I gave the nicest one that I could, while also being as honest (to both of us) as I could.
I told her that I was sorry that I had come off as rude, and that I had said not that SHE was ridiculous but that the IDEA was ridiculous and ideas don’t have feelings to hurt.
I probably could have left it there, but to the Life Coach in me it seemed to be a teaching moment, so I went on:
