Prevention Is Better
If we eat right, exercise and sleep properly, we tend to stay healthier and heal faster when we get sick. When we do that, we are taking “preventative action” by being PROACTIVE.
We do that for our cars as well. We take them in for regular tune ups, so that we won’t start seeing smoke billowing from under the hood, when we’re on our way through Calaveras or Trukee or wherever we happen to be.
Why haven’t we then prevented our children from turning out to be like the children who grew up in the backwater days of segregation and Jim Crow?
We FAILED to be proactive, and therefore what we taught, by default, was a continuation of “Jim Crow status quo”.
The consequence is that the best that we can expect, of our students is that they will be as ignorantly racist as their parents. The statistics have proved it.
Wiser folk than I have said that racism is TAUGHT. One of those wiser folk was Nelson Mandela. I stole this quote of his from someone else’s Twitter page, by the way:
Nelson Mandela put it best: no one is born a racist, but if they can learn to hate, “they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
And here is a great (or more accurately, a DEPLORABLE) example of parents TEACHING racism to their kids.
