Right Now, THEIR Lives Matter
It seems to be a good day for blogging, because it’s just one of my lower energy days today.
I was on Nextdoor.com and someone had asked for a vote as to where or not one of our street names should be changed to “Black Lives Matter”. Well, you can’t please everyone, so of course someone was going to have a miserable retort, and came out with that old saw about how “all lives matter” and how she was tired of the “pity party”.
Those of you who know me, know that I’d never let something like that go, so here was my response:
Yes, all lives matter. BUT, right now, White People aren’t suffering from institutionalized racism, and that retort, “All lives matter” is proof that we need to take a good hard look at how we see ourselves and DON’T see the small instances of racism around us.
I’m not calling anyone out, because large groups of people have responded to the BLM movement in that way and in a certain sense they’re right. All lives do matter, but if your leg was bleeding OUT from an artery, and you were quickly dying from blood loss, you would want someone to focus their attention on YOUR leg, vs. ALL LEGS.
RIGHT NOW, Black Lives Matter is a call to action that needs to be heard, whether or not SOME individuals in that group are relatable to all people.
