The Worth of WOKE

A comment on a FaceBook post about Godzilla made me write this blog post.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle about how politics seem to be contaminating even some of our favorite escapes from politics. Apparently, someone was upset about the idea that Godzilla might be recreated with pink scales.

One of my first thoughts was ‘Who cares’?! It was such a fun story line that the movie has lasted since NINETEEN FIFTY- FOUR. We have an evil alien PLANT (Little Shop of Horrors) for goddsake!! We have monsters with all colors of fur on Sesame Street and we have a heroic monster that is painted red and wears sideburns and shaves his horns.

Producers and their teams that make the movies that entertain us are constantly seeking to make something new and different to hold our attention. They do it hoping to make some money at it, and we tend to forget that they’re human like us and trying hard to push the boundaries of what we and they can imagine.

My second thought was that maybe we shouldn’t be so quick to label someone who is trying to point out real world disparities that are based on biases.

Someone was a bit scornful of “WOKE” thinking and its possible effect on their favorite movies. Someone said something about “snowflakes”. I said that those are just labels……with a BIG caveat. My own opinion is probably obvious, although I put it in the form of a question, in order to not make anyone feel attacked because people who feel attacked generally don’t listen and aren’t inclined to continue
