You know that really great Lesley Gore called “You Don’t Own Me”? It came out in 1963.

This post isn’t about that…….or maybe it is, a little because these days, it seems like every Tom, Dick and Mary (especially employers and I’ll circle back to them) thinks that they’re entitled to tell people how to live their lives whether they’re in their own home or not.

Just as often it’s family who think that they’re entitled to your money or your stuff because……….FAMILY. And FAMILY are “supposed to help each other out”.

The husband who asked Reddit if he was a jerk for being hurt that his wife refused to help him support his retired parents didn’t neglect to mention that she had already helped out his family on more than one occasion and that she was paying 70% of their household bills while he was paying only 30% because she had the higher paying job.

So in HIS mind, anyone who can AFFORD to be someone else’s piggy- bank or ATM by dint of their own hard work has a duty to support others the minute they ask for help, no matter what. If you say “no” to any reasonable request to help friends or family, when you can afford to help them then you’re “selfish”.

So, my Dear Reddit Entitled Guy, (said with scathing sarcasm) you’re telling us that it doesn’t matter how many hours your wife worked for the money. It doesn’t matter that she’s already been generously sharing her money with you and your family. It
